Colchis
This music is inspired by Georgian polyphonic songs and the extraordinary history of ancient Colchis, a land whose traces of splendor have been painstakingly discovered by Polish archaeologists for several years. The idea to record the material was born in 2019, when Kwartludium was invited by the Polish Institute in Tbilisi to undertake a study visit to Georgia. During many meetings, concerts and presentations of Georgian culture, the musicians got acquainted with the ethnographic materials and history of Colchis. They also made field recordings, which served as the starting material for creating their own electro-acoustic compositions. Michał Jacaszek, one of the most recognizable Polish electronic music composers in the world, was also invited to the project. Just as scientists discovering successive layers of archaeological deposits are not so much getting closer to answers, but to discovering new questions, the musical odyssey of Kwartludium and Jacaszek is to make us aware of the number of questions related to the musical traditions of Europe. Some ancient songs have been identified in Georgia to this day, which, according to ethnomusicologists, date back to the mythology and culture of ancient Colchis. These works inspire us to recall the richness of an unknown tradition in a new form. The very tradition which, although originates from European culture, we still know very little about.
