Paweł Nowicki

percussionist, a graduate of the Music Conservatory in Strasbourg in the class of prof. Emmanuel Séjourne. He is a laureate of international contemporary music competitions, such as the Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Rotterdam or the 1st Vibraphone Competition in Clarment-Ferrand.

Since 2002, the artist has been co-creating the contemporary music ensemble Kwartludium. He performs at the most important contemporary music festivals in Poland and abroad, such as the WDR Radio Festival in Cologne, Unsound Festival in New York, Nuove Musische Festival at Teatro Massimo in Palermo, International Festival of Contemporary Music in Daegu, South Korea, In Arti Vestival in Kaunas, Randspiele Festival in Berlin, Musica Viva Festival in Lisbon, Beijing Modern Music Festival. As a chamber musician, the musician gave concerts in prestigious concert halls, i.e. Southbank Center Royal Festival Hall in London, Lincoln Center, Lviv Philharmonic, National Philharmonic, NOSPR in Katowice and Cornegie Hall in New York. He took part in the Kwadrofonik and the guests project, which performed Steve Reich’s flagship work of minimalism, Music for 18 musicians.

Paweł Nowicki conducts organizational activity – he is the vice-president of the New Music Foundation Kwartludium. In 2016, he was the curator of the New Music Days festival in Gdańsk. Thanks to organizational activity, the album Paweł Nowicki 3 City Ensemble – Przymysły was also created, whose musician was the producer, composer and coordinator. The project was supported by the Association of Artists ZAiKS, STOART, the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk, the Marshal’s Office and a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Since 2003, the artist has been collaborating with the Warsaw Autumn Festival, making numerous world premieres of solo and chamber works. Paweł Nowicki is also a co-founder of the duo Nowicki Duo, which he creates with pianist Piotr Nowicki. The ensemble’s repertoire consists of numerous compositions written especially for musicians. In 2023 the duo recorded an album with seven premiere compositions by contemporary Polish composers.

Paweł Nowicki is the creator of theater and film music. Since 2012, the artist has been collaborating with the Miniatura Theatre in Gdansk. One of the most important activities in the field of film music is participation in the recording of Maciej Cieślak’s music for the famous film Rabbit a la Berlin, dir. Bartosz Konopka.

Teaching is an important area of the musician’s activity – in January 2016 Paweł Nowicki together with Kwartludium ensemble conducted contemporary music workshops with students of primary and lower secondary schools in Australia. In October 2018, the artist was awarded the title of Teacher of the Year in a nationwide competition for the best lesson about Polish music organized by the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw. In 2022, Paweł Nowicki received the Award of the Mayor of the City of Gdańsk for his pedagogical activity. In 2020, Paweł Nowicki obtained a doctoral degree at the Academy of Music in Gdańsk. From next academic year, Paweł Nowicki will start working with the Academy of Music in Gdańsk as a lecturer in the percussion class.
